Mining The Archive

Jan.2011
Outpost for Contemporary Art, Los Angeles

MINING THE ARCHIVE is a recurring project that invites artists, curators and art historians to explore the collection of art periodicals at Outpost for Contemporary Art, each responding to the texts and images they find by spotlighting and annotating 10 articles, advertisements and reviews from the collection. In turn, the Outpost community will create a fluid dialogue by commenting in turn on the project's marginalia.

For the first iteration of MINING THE ARCHIVE, MATERIAL Press engaged with Outpost's archive, and created a new journal entitled "Re-Opening" (taken from an ad for an exhibition at the Jean Larcade Gallery in Paris from ArtNews 1965). The contents of the new journal included responses in the form of paintings, drawings and texts from artists Joseph Mosconi, Dee Williams, Katie Lewis Underwood, Alex Klein, Kim Schoen, Ginny Cook, Kate Glicksberg, Adam Berg, Gil Leung, and David Raymond Conroy.

In conjunction with the launch of "Re-Opening", Ronni Kimm of ART2102 hosted a panel discussion with MATERIAL and Alex Klein of OSLO Editions, entitled "On Text as Material and Printed Matters."
