I remember reading an interview, ages ago, with the singer/songwriter of the ‘90s band Soul Coughing – him describing how he wrote the song “Is Chicago/Is Not Chicago.” He was apparently in a hotel room – somewhere in Chicago – and thinking about the place he was in, he started playing a game with himself where he would point at different things in the room – objects, furniture, elements of the room’s architecture – or at things out the window, and try to determine whether they were or were not – Chicago. In the course of the game, he concluded that all the things he could see and point at, everything outside of him, outside of his body – were Chicago; whereas he himself – his hands, hair, eyes, mouth – were not. But then he became aware of his body’s porousness, its orifices, of the unstable border that is his skin. And he realized he was breathing the air – which was Chicago, and touching objects in the room which were all Chicago, that he had eaten an apple which was Chicago, and was rubbing his fingers, which were not Chicago, on surfaces of things that were Chicago, at which point he felt very confused.
