Born in 1951 in Hartford, Connecticut, James Welling studied with Gandy Brodie at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA where he worked in installation and sculpture. Welling earned both a BFA and an MFA from the newly created California Institute of the Arts, where he worked primarily in video and studied with Wolfgang Storechle, Dan Graham, and John Baldessari. Welling emerged in the late 70s as an artist for whom photographic norms and the representational field itself were (and remain) not a given but rather a field of contest between different formal languages.
Surveys of Welling’s work have been held at museums throughout the United States and Europe including the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Winterthur, Switzerland (2013‐2014); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2013-2014); Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, OH (2013); Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Belgium (2002); The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2001); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH (2000); The Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD (2000); Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA (1998-°©‐1999); Kunstmuseum Luzern, Lucerne, Switzerland (1998); and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg, Germany (1994).
